Steps toward survival
By Hugh Johnson, Wheat Ridge Transcript
Some people run to stay healthy, others jog to experience the beauty of the Colorado summer. Those who attended Exempla Lutheran Medical Center’s Leaves of Hope Run/Walk Sunday ran for a different reason, to celebrate life.
In conjunction with National Cancer Survivor’s Day, Exempla Lutheran hosted its seventh Leaves of Hope Run/Walk in celebration of the 14 million cancer survivors in America. A sunny day that included breakfast for cancer survivors, music, snow cones and more, the event featured a kids 100-yard dash, a 1-mile family walk, a 5k run/walk and a 10k run/walk in which participants got run along the Crown Hill Lake Park.
The 2014 Leaves of Hope event welcomes signature keynote speaker Chris Daniels, Colorado Music Hall of Famer and three year cancer survivor. Chris’s combination of survivor story, humor and music will truly inspire all.
Chris Daniels and The Kings will perform live music during Cancer Survivors Celebration on June 1.
23 days! That’s right we are only 23 days away from one of the biggest celebrations of the year here at Exempla Lutheran Medical Center….our annual Leaves of Hope Run/Walk and Cancer Survivor Celebration. Each day we are working hard to put together all the final details to make this celebration a wonderful experience for you, your family and friends. We have received the support from so many wonderful local businesses, organizations and schools who have committed to partnering with us to help make this year’s event the best one yet!
We are so grateful and pleased to announce that the following businesses will be there on June 2nd donating their delicious food for the day, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop (Olde Town Arvada), Jimmy Johns (Lakewood), Texas Roadhouse (Arvada) and Bliss Frozen Yogurt (Arvada).
Door prizes…everyone loves winning something! Well we have received some great donations that will be used as door prizes from the following businesses: Arvada Apex Center, Marriott Hotels, Boondocks Fun Center, Denver Zoo, Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Pink Fog Photography, and Arvada Center for the Arts, and The Keg, just to name a few. Plus we keep receiving more daily!
YOU MIGHT BE THE ONE PERSON TO SAVE A LIFE! This year we are so excited the Love Hope Strength Foundation will be getting people ON THE LIST to become marrow donors. It is a painless, simple and FREE procedure to get registered. All you need to do is complete a registration form and sign a donor consent form. Then you will have your cheek swabbed with a cotton-tipped swab and that’s it! Once that is all done the company will then send the cells that were taken to a lab to be tested to determine your tissue type. Your data is then entered into the National Marrow Donor Program registry in anonymous form, so doctors can search for a donor for their patients. How easy is that! Please be sure to stop by the Love Hope Strength booth on June 2nd to get ON THE LIST!
The excitement doesn’t stop there though. We have several non-profit organizations that will have booths set up on June 2nd to help educate our community. LIVESTRONG, Breathe Easy, Bonfils Blood Bank, Colorado Ovarian Cancer Alliance, American Cancer Society, Jeffco Wellness Now, Cops Fighting Cancer, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the Colorado Cancer Coalition and more!
Don’t forget we also have Ethan Zohn as our keynote speaker. He will be taking part in the run/walk with cancer survivors and giving out awards. The cheer & pom squads from both Wheat Ridge High School and Arvada West High School will also be present to cheer everyone on and offer encouragement along the route. We have activities planned for all the children, and so much more!
As you can see we have a day full of fun, education and excitement lined up to celebrate YOU! If you haven’t registered yet for the celebration, don’t delay, we want to see you there, so register today!
Ethan Zohn, cancer survivor, 2002 winner of the reality TV show Survivor, professional soccer player and cofounder of Grassroot Soccer, a non-profit that promotes HIV/AIDS prevention through the help of professional soccer players, will be the keynote speaker at the annual Leaves of Hope Run/Walk on Sunday, June 2.
Throughout his battle with cancer – twice beating a rare form of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma – Zohn has run marathons and served as an inspiration and a global ambassador for a variety of charities, including Stand Up To Cancer, LIVESTRONG Foundation, Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation and BEYOND SPORT. His reach is vast and it is his mission to be the megaphone for the young adult generation battling cancer.
“Ethan has been a source of such strength and humor to so many around the world in his own battle with cancer, and has provided unflagging support of others with the disease,” said Carol Salzmann, executive director of Lutheran Medical Center Foundation. “We are truly honored to have him bring that message of inspiration and hope to our community.”
Zohn will join cancer survivors at the run/walk, present race awards and offer meaningful words as the keynote during the Cancer Survivors Day Celebration. The event benefits loved ones, friends and co-workers experiencing cancer in our community by bringing together people of all ages, from children to seniors, with a common purpose to celebrate and honor cancer survivors while making a difference locally.
A motivational speaker and children’s author, Zohn also has appeared on Fear Factor and The Amazing Race, has been a guest host on MTV and VH1, and was featured in a documentary film A Closer Walk, along with the Dalai Lama, Bono and Kofi Annan.
Zohn co-hosted the 2012 Daytime Emmy Nominated ABC show Everyday Health, which launched September 2011, traveling the country covering stories on amazing people who have gone through a health crisis and continue to use the power of the human spirit to not only better themselves, but the communities around them. He is also the co-host of OUTSIDE TODAY, airing on Outside Television Network. This morning chat show covers all aspects of living an active lifestyle. He also has appeared on Fear Factor and The Amazing Race, has been a guest host on MTV and VH1, and was featured in a documentary film A Closer Walk, along with the Dalai Lama, Bono and Kofi Annan.
The author of the children’s book series, SOCCER WORLD, Zohn believes that every crisis is the opportunity to do something good in this world.
From family members to close friends, everyone knows someone whose life has been touched by cancer. The Leaves of Hope and Cancer Survivors Day Celebration are meant to honor the courage and perseverance of our community’s cancer survivors and acknowledge the care and compassion provided by families, friends and health care providers. Throughout the world, communities celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day® as a way to show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful, fulfilling, and even inspiring.
